Dr. Ravi E. Dattatreya Ph.D. ’78
A proud Cal alum, Dr. Ravi E. Dattatreya says that the doctoral work he pursued at Berkeley changed the trajectory of his life — but it almost didn’t happen at all. It was purely due to donor generosity that the native of Bangalore, India, was even able to attend Berkeley.
“Thanks to the fellowship I received as a student, I could fully immerse myself in my academics,” recalls Ravi, whose Ph.D. at Berkeley led to a long and successful career in finance. “The cherished memories I hold, and the rewarding career I’ve embraced, are owed to Berkeley and the donor generosity that provided me with an affordable education.”
As a student, Ravi was inspired by the university’s world-class reputation, and he looks back fondly on his rigorous studies in industrial engineering and operations research. More recently, he’s demonstrated his appreciation for Cal and the power of philanthropy in his own right, establishing a scholarship through the university’s Fiat Lux Scholarship program to provide much-needed financial support to deserving students.
Looking back on his Cal days, Ravi has just one regret. “I was in a big hurry to finish my Ph.D. in record time and get into the job market,” he says, “but if I could do it over, I would spend just a bit more time at Berkeley.”
