Professor Bautista studies the molecular mechanisms underlying the sensations of itch, touch, and pain, particularly as they relate to diseases such as cancer and diabetes. Bautista is a recipient of the Society for Neuroscience Young Investigator Award and the National Institutes of Health New Innovator Award.

Professor Isacoff leads the Berkeley Brain Initiative, the Berkeley Molecular Imaging Center, and the Berkeley-Zeiss Brain Microscopy Innovation Center. Isacoff is a world leader in the study of the chemical and electrical signaling of neurons and the creation of optical neurotechnologies to observe and remotely control activity in brain cells.

Professor Maharbiz directs the Berkeley Sensor and Actuator Center and the Berkeley SwarmLab, where he investigates how to build micro/nano interfaces to cells and organisms. In 2009, Time magazine listed his radio-controlled cyborg beetle, the world’s first, among the Top 50 Inventions for that year.
