The Future of Public Higher Education
This panel discussion explored the future of public higher education in America. The event was held in the Wells Fargo Room at the Haas School of Business.
Haas is the former chief executive officer and chairman of Levi Strauss & Co. and one of Cal’s biggest boosters. He received the Chancellor’s Award in 2007 and the Cal Alumni Association’s Alumnus of the Year Award in 2009. He currently serves as the national annual giving chair for The Campaign for Berkeley.
Chancellor Emeritus, UC Berkeley
Birgeneau served as Berkeley’s Chancellor from 2004 to 2013. Prior to coming to Berkeley, he was the president of the University of Toronto for four years. One of the most highly cited physicists in the world, Birgeneau has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale, and he was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories from 1968 to 1975.

Brady is dean of the Goldman School of Public Policy and the Class of 1941 Monroe Deutsch Professor of Political Science and Public Policy. He is a leading scholar of electoral politics and political participation, social welfare policy, and computer management of social programs. He has worked for the Office of Management and Budget in Washington, D.C.

Saxenian is dean and professor in the School of Information and professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning. Her most recent book, The New Argonauts: Regional Advantage in the Global Economy, explores how immigrant engineers from Silicon Valley have transferred technology entrepreneurship to emerging regions in China, India, Taiwan, and Israel.
