Haas is the former chief executive officer and chairman of Levi Strauss & Co. and one of Cal’s biggest boosters. He received the Chancellor’s Award in 2007 and the Cal Alumni Association’s Alumnus of the Year Award in 2009. He currently serves as the national annual giving chair for The Campaign for Berkeley.

Birgeneau served as Berkeley’s Chancellor from 2004 to 2013. Prior to coming to Berkeley, he was the president of the University of Toronto for four years. One of the most highly cited physicists in the world, Birgeneau has taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale, and he was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories from 1968 to 1975.

Her most recent book, The New Argonauts: Regional Advantage in the Global Economy, explores how immigrant engineers from Silicon Valley have transferred technology entrepreneurship to emerging regions in China, India, Taiwan, and Israel.
