Leadership and Innovation at UC Berkeley

With panelists from three disparate fields, this discussion provided a variety of perspectives on leadership and innovation. The event was held in the Club Room at Haas Pavilion.

Jennifer Granholm ’84

Former Governor, Michigan; Lecturer, Interdisciplinary Courses, UC Berkeley

Granholm, Michigan’s first female governor, led the state for two terms through a harsh economic downturn by diversifying its economy, strengthening its auto industry, and supporting new sectors such as clean energy. She has taught interdisciplinary courses at Berkeley on energy, leadership, state budgets, and the economy.

Kellie McElhaney

Margo N. Alexander Faculty Fellow of Corporate Responsibility, Founding Executive Director, Co-faculty Director, Center for Responsible Business, Berkeley Haas

McElhaney is the Margo N. Alexander Faculty Fellow of Corporate Responsibility and founding executive director and co-faculty director at the Center for Responsible Business at the Haas School of Business. McElhaney’s research on corporate social responsibility is explored in her book, Just Good Business: The Strategic Guide to Aligning Corporate Responsibility and Brand, which was published in 2008.

Anthony “Tony” Smith ’92, M.A ’93, Ph.D. ’02

Superintendent, Oakland Unified School District

Smith became superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District in 2009. A veteran of the Bay Area education reform movement, he previously was deputy superintendent of the San Francisco Unified School District, where he was praised for his work in the areas of innovation, instruction, and social justice.
